Why are good security hackers called “White Hats”? Well, because we're the good guys. But why are good guys called “White Hats”? That'll be the legacy of cowboy films, especially silent films, where the audience needed to identify the hero quickly. The biggest and best White Hat film cowboy was Tom Mix. Of course, he did all his own stunts, too.
